A few years ago, we were discussing his sales\ntechniques, and he made a comment that was profound to me. He said, &#8220;my\nhappiest clients are the ones I make the most money on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He wasn&#8217;t overcharging clients\nwho happened to like him. On the contrary, he understood that long-term client\nrelationships were valuable, and it was his responsibility to build them with a\npositive attitude, action, and an eagerness to serve. Happy clients are repeat\nclients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use these phrases as a\nframework when you interact with your clients. The five phrases below are\naction phrases. They require effort and follow through on your part. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Hi\n(name), how was&#8230;..?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging your client&#8217;s\npersonal life tells them that they&#8217;re essential to you. Follow up on activities\nthey&#8217;ve mentioned like a new restaurant they were planning to try, a family\nvacation or a child&#8217;s sporting event. Only use this phrase if you&#8217;ve developed\na level of familiarity, and you have a genuine interest in your client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Happy to help.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your client has a\nneed, they see it as an obstacle to overcome. They want to know that you&#8217;re not\nonly able and willing to resolve it for them\u2013you&#8217;re eager to do it. Clients\nlove working with people that have a positive attitude and enjoy what they do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ll\ntake care of it immediately.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This phrase conveys that\nyou are proactive and that you consider your client&#8217;s needs critical. Consider\nit a promise. It may be a time-sensitive issue or a missed item on their order\nthat needs to be corrected. The less time it takes to resolve the issue, the\nmore value you will have with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know, but I&#8217;ll find out and let you know by&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transparency goes a long\nway in any relationship. Not knowing something can be a positive. Being willing\nto work on your client&#8217;s behalf and setting a day and time to get back to them\nis what matters. Following through builds trust, and trust leads to future\norders and referrals. If you can\u2019t get the answer by the set time, call them\nand explain why it\u2019s taking longer than expected and set a new time. Not\ncalling tells the client you\u2019re unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;As\nmuch as I would love to help&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, you won&#8217;t be\nable to meet your potential or existing client&#8217;s needs. It&#8217;s an excellent\nopportunity for adding value to yourself by making the extra effort. Offer to\nfind a solution for them or provide a referral. If it&#8217;s a potential client,\nconsider it a test run to show how valuable you can be to them in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final\nThoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing happy clients\nstarts with elevating yourself above the apparent profit motive attached to\nsales. You are selling yourself, and the first step is being likable. If you&#8217;re\nlikable, your clients will listen to you. If they listen to you, they will\neventually trust you.
